Sellers FAQ

Everything sellers ask, answered in plain language.

Joining Homakes

Who can sell on Homakes?

Any individual in India who makes their own products at home. You register in your own name, as an individual or sole proprietor.

You do not need a company, a shop, or a registered business. You do need to be the person actually making what you sell.

What can I sell?

Homakes has three categories open for registration:

  • Food Products - pickles, snacks, sweets, masalas, baked goods and other packaged food
  • Crafts & Decors - handmade crafts, decor and gifts
  • Home & Body Care - soaps, balms, scrubs and household items
  • Eat Fresh - freshly cooked home food, made to order

Everything you sell has to be made by you. Buying finished goods and reselling them is not allowed.

Is there any charge to join?

No. There is no registration fee, no listing fee, no monthly subscription and no charge for the Partner App.

Homakes deducts a Platform Charge of [X]% only when you complete a sale.

How do I register?

Four steps:

  • Pick your category on the Homakes partner page and fill the join form
  • Someone from Homakes will contact you and take you through the rest
  • Send your documents for verification
  • Once verified, install the Partner App and add your first products

If you get stuck at any point, call the Partner onboarding number and someone will help.

How long does verification take?

It depends on how complete your documents are. Most delays are caused by a blurred photograph or a name mismatch, not by Homakes.

You will be told if something needs fixing rather than simply left waiting.

Do I have to commit for a long time?

No. There is nothing to lock you in and nothing to pay if it does not work out.

Try it for a few months and see how it suits your products and your routine. If you want to stop, you can end the agreement with 30 days' notice, and any orders already placed simply have to be completed first.

Can I sell on Homakes and on other platforms at the same time?

Yes. Homakes does not ask for exclusivity. You are free to sell your products anywhere else, including from your own social media.

Can I sell under a brand name instead of my own name?

Your Homakes registration and your bank account have to be in your own name. Your storefront and your products can carry your brand name.

Documents and licences

What documents do I need?

Every seller needs these four:

  • Aadhaar card, in your own name
  • PAN card, in your own name
  • Bank account number and IFSC code
  • A phone number and email address you check regularly

What else you need depends on what you sell.

Do I need an FSSAI licence?

Yes, if you sell food. Everyone selling food in India needs one.

Most home sellers start with a Basic Registration, which covers small turnover and is applied for online for a small fee. You move to a State Licence once your turnover crosses the Basic limit.

Crafts & Decors needs no licence at all.

How much does an FSSAI registration cost?

The government fee for a Basic Registration is about ₹100 a year, and you can pay for up to five years at once. Basic Registration covers turnover up to roughly ₹12 lakh a year; above that you need a State Licence, which costs more.

You apply yourself online at foscos.fssai.gov.in. You can register your home as the food business address, with an electricity bill or rent agreement as proof - you do not need a separate commercial kitchen.

Consultants will do it for you for a few thousand rupees. That is their fee, not the government's, and for a Basic Registration most sellers do not need one.

What about soaps and body care products?
Being confirmed. Soaps, balms and scrubs are regulated as cosmetics rather than as food, and the licensing is different. We are confirming exactly what a home maker needs before this category opens for registration. Message us if this is what you make.
Do I need GST registration?

Not necessarily. Small sellers below the turnover threshold are not required to register.

If you are already registered, add your GSTIN when you join and your monthly filings stay yours. If you are not, Homakes will tell you what applies to your situation and where to enrol if you need to.

Ask before you register rather than after. Getting this right at the start is far easier than correcting it later.

Why does my bank account name have to match my PAN?

Because your weekly settlement is paid against those details. If the names differ - a maiden name, an initial, a spelling difference - the transfer fails and the money bounces back.

Fix it before your first sale, not after.

Do I need a current account, or can I use my savings account?

A savings account is fine. You do not need to open a current account to sell on Homakes.

What matters is that the account is in your own name and matches your PAN.

Why was my application rejected?

Almost always one of four things:

  • A photograph too blurred to read
  • The name on the bank account not matching the PAN
  • An FSSAI registration that has expired
  • Documents in someone else's name - a husband's, a son's, a relative's

The last one is the most common. Your Homakes account has to be in the name of the person actually making and selling the products.

Listing your products

How many products can I list?

As many as you like. There is no listing fee however many you add.

Do I have to keep stock ready?

Yes. If a product is showing as available, you should be able to pack it and hand it over as soon as the order comes in. Only list what you can actually supply.

If you make in batches, mark an item out of stock when you run out and mark it back in when the next batch is ready. That is far better than accepting an order you cannot fulfil.

Customised and made-to-order items work differently - see below.

Can I sell customised or made-to-order items?

Yes. These are made after the customer orders, so say clearly in the listing what can be customised and how long it will take you.

Customised and made-to-order items cannot be returned for a change of mind, so the description has to be accurate and the timeline has to be one you can keep.

What has to go on a food listing?

For anything edible:

  • The full ingredient list
  • Net weight or quantity
  • Shelf life and how to store it
  • The vegetarian or non-vegetarian mark
  • Any allergens - nuts, dairy, gluten and so on

This is a legal requirement, not a Homakes preference, and it is also what makes customers trust an unfamiliar seller.

Does the label on my pack matter?

Yes, as much as the listing. Because you are selling a sealed, pre-packed product, the pack itself has to carry the net quantity, the date it was made, a best-before date, the veg or non-veg mark, the ingredients, and a name and address a customer can complain to.

Homakes does not print labels for you. The pack is yours.

Can I put my phone number or my own website on a listing?

No. Contact details, external links and prices do not belong in the title, the description or the photographs.

Pricing and the Platform Charge

Who decides the price?

You do. Homakes does not set your prices and does not require you to match any other seller. Any suggestion from Homakes is a suggestion only.

What is the Platform Charge?

It is [X]% of each completed order, deducted before your settlement. It is how Homakes earns - only when you earn.

Nothing is deducted on an order that does not go through.

What should my price cover?

Work backwards from everything the sale costs you:

  • Ingredients or raw materials
  • Your packaging, labels and tape
  • Your own time and labour
  • Wastage and the occasional spoilt batch
  • The Platform Charge

Sellers who price only on ingredients usually find they are working for nothing.

Can I run discounts or offers?

Yes. A discount you offer is funded by you, so work out what it leaves before you run it. Platform-wide campaigns are separate and are always opt-in.

Orders, packing and delivery

How does an order reach the customer?

You pack it and keep it ready. A Homakes Delivery Partner collects it from your door and takes it to the customer. You do not arrange couriers, compare rates or chase a missing parcel.

Do I deliver orders myself?

No. Delivery is always through a Homakes Delivery Partner.

Where does Homakes deliver?

Food Products, Crafts & Decors and Home & Body Care are delivered across India, so you can sell well beyond your own city.

Eat Fresh is freshly cooked food, so it is delivered locally, in selected service areas only.

Can I track an order?

Yes. Every order is tracked from pickup through to delivery.

Does Homakes give me packaging?

No. Packaging, boxes, labels, tape and any branding stickers are yours, at your own cost.

Where we can, Homakes will point you to vendors who supply them. That is an introduction only - the purchase is between you and the vendor, and Homakes takes no commission on it.

What is the OTP at delivery?

The customer gives the Delivery Partner a one-time password to confirm the order arrived. It protects you as much as the customer: it is the record that the order was delivered.

The customer is paying cash. Do I collect it?

Never. On a Cash on Delivery order the Delivery Partner collects the cash. It reaches you the same way as a card or UPI payment, in your weekly settlement.

What if I cannot fulfil an order?

Tell Homakes as early as you can rather than letting the customer wait. Cancelling after a customer has paid affects your rating, and repeated cancellations are treated as a compliance issue.

Payments and settlement

When do I get paid?

Every Wednesday, to your registered bank account.

Who does the customer pay?

Homakes. The customer pays the platform, and Homakes settles your earnings to you. You never have to follow up with a customer for money.

What is deducted before I am paid?

The Platform Charge of [X]%, and any refund that was due to something you got wrong. Your earnings screen in the Partner App shows each order, what was deducted and what was settled.

Do I need my own payment gateway?

No. Card, UPI and Cash on Delivery all reach you the same way, through your weekly settlement.

My settlement was less than I expected. What now?

Check your earnings screen first - it itemises every order and every deduction. If it still looks wrong, call the Tech and Partner App number with the order numbers in question.

Do I have to raise invoices?

Your earnings statement records each settlement. If you are GST registered, your own filing obligations continue as normal.

Returns, refunds and disputes

When can a customer return something?

Crafts and similar items can be returned if they arrive defective, damaged or not as described, with proof such as photographs or an unboxing video.

Food cannot be returned for taste or for a change of mind. Refunds on food apply where an item was wrong, missing, tampered with or never delivered.

What is never refundable?
  • Customised and made-to-order items
  • Perishable goods, except where something was wrong with the order
  • Anything used, altered or damaged after delivery
Who pays for a refund?

If the refund is because of something you got wrong - the wrong item, a damaged product, a description that did not match - it is deducted from your settlement.

You are not charged for a refund that was not your fault.

What if a parcel is lost or damaged in transit?
Being confirmed. We are settling exactly how transit loss and damage are handled between Homakes, the Delivery Partner and the seller. This answer will be updated once that is final.
A customer has complained and I disagree. What happens?

Raise it through the Partner App or with support, with whatever evidence you have - photographs of the packed order are the most useful thing you can keep.

If it is still not resolved to your satisfaction, you can escalate to the Grievance Officer. Contact details are in the Seller Policies.

Ratings and staying on the platform

How are sellers rated?

Customers rate their orders after delivery. Your rating is the average of those.

Is there a minimum rating?

Yes, 3.5 stars. Fall below it and Homakes will work with you to bring it back up before any other step is taken.

What pulls a rating down?

Usually one of four things, and all four are fixable:

  • Late handover, so the order reaches the customer late
  • Packaging that does not survive the journey
  • A product that does not match its photographs or description
  • Cancelling after the customer has paid
Can I be removed from Homakes?

Only for serious or repeated breaches - selling something you are not allowed to sell, false claims, or a rating that stays low after Homakes has tried to help.

You can also leave whenever you want. Either side can end the agreement with 30 days' notice.

Your account and your data

What does Homakes do with my documents?

They are used to verify you and to pay you, and they are shared only where an order or the law requires it - a delivery partner, a payment processor, a tax authority. Your documents are never sold.

Will anyone from Homakes ask me for an OTP or a password?

Never. Nobody from Homakes will ever ask you for an OTP, a bank password, a UPI PIN or your card details - not on a call, not on WhatsApp, not in the app.

Anyone who does is not from Homakes, whatever number they call from. Hang up and report it on the Tech and Partner App number.

The only OTP in the process is the one the customer gives the Delivery Partner to confirm an order arrived. You are never asked for one.

Will my name and photograph be used in marketing?

Only if you are happy with it. If you would rather your name, photograph or story were not used, tell us and we will leave you out.

Can I pause my shop?

Yes. Mark yourself unavailable in the Partner App when you travel or stop making for a while, rather than leaving orders you cannot fulfil.

Can I close my account?

Yes, with 30 days' notice. Any orders already placed have to be completed or properly cancelled, and your final settlement follows the normal Wednesday cycle.
